Caroline Garcia sails past Elena Bogdan to secure a second round berth – Ankara Cup 2011
Fifth seeded French, Caroline Garcia, trashed the Romanian, Elena Bogdan, in straight sets at the Ankara Cup 2011, the inaugural edition of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit tournament,
played on the hard courts in Ankara, Turkey. She clobbered a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the 19-year-old opponent to book a second round spot on Monday.
18-year-old Garcia quickly swiped the match after dumping her fellow teenager, ranked 199th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier Rankings, on their first meeting. Eying her maiden silverware,
the Frenchwoman confidently advanced into the second round of the event.
Garcia stepped on the Turkish hard courts high spiritedly and easily plucked in the opening serve. After the Romanian levelled the scores at 2-2, Garcia unleashed barrage of ground strokes to wipe out the next
four games in a row. She dusted away all breakpoints faced and capitalised on two out of four break opportunities, subsequently sealing the deal by winning six games to two.
World number 147, Garcia kept momentum flowing into the final set and held her opening serve convincingly through exquisite forehands from her arsenal of skills. After exchanging a break point, the French broke
Bogdan’s serve again in the end, clinching the set with a 6-4 win. She warded off three out of four breakpoints she came across and capitalised on two out of five break chances to conclude victory.
Garcia had a monotonous season so far, as she had a 21-19 win–loss record for the last twelve months and she had title-round berths in Kazan (lost to Russian Yulia Putintseva) and Osprey (lost to French Claire
De Gubernatis) ITF events. Next up for the fifth seed is the winner of the match between a local wild card entrant, Naz Karagoz, and a Romanian qualifier, Laura-Ioana Andrei. She also reached the final four at the Pelham and Fergana ITF events.
Ukrainian Yulia Beygelzimer will join the French in the round of sixteen. She crushed a local wild card contestant, Ipek Soylu, with a breadstick on their first meeting.
The 28-year-old Ukrainian exchanged two breaks early in the opening set and eventually levelled the scores at 5-5. She got the desiderated break in the eleventh game and comfortably held her serve in the last
game to seal the set by winning seven games to five.
Beygelzimer went berserk in the final set and bombarded powerful ground strokes to reel off six games in a row, pocketing a bagel in under half an hour.
