Caroline Garcia stuns Alexandra Cadantu in opening round – KDB Korea Open 2012
French qualifier, Caroline Garcia, shocked the Romanian starlet, Alexandra Cadantu, in straight sets at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Tuesday. She penned down a 6-2, 6-3 success against the world number 84 to secure a place in the second
round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place in South Korea.
The French teenager showed top class performance to triumph over Cadantu in one hour and 12 minutes. After recording this victory, Garcia comfortably secured a spot in the round of 16 at this outdoor hard court event.
Garcia high-spiritedly entered the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. She cruised to a 5-0 lead through exquisite forehands from her box of tricks. Despite losing her serve in the seventh game, the French capitalised on another break chance in the last game
and clicked the opener with a 6-2 score line.
Ranked 180th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Garcia kept momentum rolling in the following set. He got the coveted break in the fourth game and took a 3-1 lead. Regardless of losing her edge in the fifth game, the French got the breakthrough in the
eighth game and bagged the opener with a 6-3 win.
The 18-year-old produced a slightly higher first serve share of 52 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 51 per cent and brilliantly marked 25 out of 32 points on it. She spilled more unforced errors but smacked six aces to prevail.
Next challenge for Garcia is the top seed, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark.
The former world number one, Wozniacki destroyed the Dutch contender, Arantxa Rus, with a breadstick to progress.
"I definitely played better today than I have for a while," Wozniacki stated in a courtside interview after conquering her opponent. "I've been practicing hard and I'm happy to see the results from that. I'm happy to be through. I'm just taking it one match
at a time."
The 22-year-old impressively defended all three breakpoints she came across to keep her entire serves. Wozniacki cashed in all four break chances to formulate a 6-1, 6-2 score line in one hour and two minutes.
