Caroline Hedwall finishes runner-up at Hero Women’s Indian Open
Swedish Caroline Hedwall failed to defend her title at the Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012, but the star golfer fought hard till the final moment of the three-day tournament as she finished runner-up.
The Ladies European Tour (LET) tournament, held at DLF Golf & Country Club, New Delhi, India, featured a solid field, but much of the attention was grabbed by players such as Hedwall, who appeared to be in great shape.
The defending champion shot an overall 207, standing four strokes behind the winner, Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand. Phatlum, who had already won two editions of the tournament in 2008 and 2009, displayed a stellar performance in all three rounds and managed to post an overall 203 to finish at the top.
Hedwall could not get off to a fast start as she posted a 76 in the opening around on Friday, but made a charge in the top-10 in the second round as she shot a massive 62.
Keeping pressure intact on rivals, the Swedish star made another solid attempt when she posted another massive score in the third round. Although posting a 69 helped her take a significant jump in the leaderboard positions, Phatlum stood unchallenged till the end of the tournament on Sunday.
Phatlum shot a 66 in the final round to further tighten her grip on the match, which led to her third victory of the prestigious tournament.
Having grabbed the third title, the Thai star has now become the strongest contender in the tournament.
Phatlum shared her thoughts at the end of the tournament on Sunday, saying she is more than thrilled to have won in India once again, and this victory is sure to help her shine at the final LET battle—Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.
Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012 is scheduled for December 5-8, at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
“I’m so happy now. It’s like a big tournament; I won and in two days it will be my birthday so it’s going to be a big present for me,” said Phatlum who also plays on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour.
On the other hand, Europeans also displayed a better performance overall, seizing most of the top-ranked positions on the leaderboard.
