Caroline Hedwall ready to defend title in India
Swedish Caroline Hedwall is going to defend her title at the Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012, scheduled to be played from November 30th to December 2nd at the DLF Golf & Country Club, New Delhi, India.
Hedwall appears to be in her best form these days, and her title defence is not just about winning the event once again—she is keen to end Asian rule and cement European mark in India.
Since three out of the total five events were won by Asian contenders, it has become even more crucial for players like Hedwall to remain in contention till the final moment of the three-day tournament.
Hedwall is able to repeat her last year’s performance as she has kept her winning form going in the 2012 season. She won the 2012 UNIQA Ladies Golf Open—something that reflects the Swedish star is able to inflict a defeat on rivals this week.
Hedwall displayed a stellar performance at the 2011 Hero Women’s Indian Open as she came face-to-face against Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand.
The defending champion put pressure on rivals right from the start of the tournament and shot a 67 in the first round. She posted a 68 in the second round to further cement her position on the leaderboard.
The third round of the 2011 Hero Women’s Indian Open saw her play even more confidently as Phatlum edged closer to her on the leaderboard.
The Hero Women’s Indian Open was first launched in 2007. Yani Tseng, who is currently the number one golfer on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, snapped up the inaugural title.
Then Phatlum jumped in and racked up two consecutive titles, in 2008 and 2009.
Observers said that after some amazing successes recorded by Asian giants, it had become somewhat dreary for Asian golf fans and they looked for something more interesting.
The field of the tournament typically features prominent stars from across the world, but Europeans were the first ones to respond to Asian domination.
English Laura Davies was the first player to end Asian winning streak as she grabbed a title at the 2010 edition of the tournament.
Davies displayed a solid performance in all the three rounds, making perfect putts on the greens to subdue all her rivals.
