Caroline Heldwall’s title defence – Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012
Top brass of the Ladies European Tour will compete in the DLF golf and country club in India. The tournament is held every year since 2007.
Pornanong Phatlum, Laura Davies and Caroline Heldwall are the 3 most notable players in the tournament’s history.
The tournament goes on for a period of three days and is played over 54 holes. It has prize money of $300,000. The players will tee off on the 30th of November and will go on to play the event till the 2nd of December.
The tournament will include a stiff Indian challenge. Local players, who know the greens better, will definitely put up a tough battle on the field.
With the scarcity of international tournaments in the region, the Hero Women’s Indian Open title provides a very good platform for the regional players. The exposure provided by the tournament brings out new potential.
Competing with international players gives the local players an experience to cherish, which they take along with them when they compete in the international circuit.
The world number one in the ladies circuit is an Asian, Yani Tseng of Chinese Taipei. Winning the title in the DHL golf and country club in 2007 proved to be a stepping stone for Tseng.
She has since then dominated the international circuit and is placed at number one in the ladies rankings. She has other compatriots in the top-ten rankings.
The Swede, Caroline Heldwall, who attends Oklahoma State University, will be going headstrong into the tournament.
With a title win and everything going her way, she is prone to repeat history, as she will be going into the Hero Women’s Indian Open as the defending champion.
Winning a tournament right after an injury, she has made a perfect gateway to her title defense.
Last year’s second place contender, Pornanong Phatlum has confirmed her participation in the tournament as well. The two giants of the Ladies European Tour will be seen competing again.
Heldwall clinched last year’s title with a score of twelve-under par, where as Phatlum trailed by two shots and finished with a ten-under par.
There is plenty stake for the players who participate in the tournament. The title is one of the major events of Asia, attracting sponsors from all over.
Meanwhile, the likes of Laura Davies will also be gracing the tournament.
Leading the stellar cast, Davies is considered to be the title favourite. She won the tournament back in 2010. With that, she has won 85 international titles, including four majors.
With a good solid 2012 season, she is all set to win the title. Since Davies and Heldwall both look in tremendous form, the tournament promises to be exciting.
