Caroline Ruhnau wins Women’s 200m breast-stroke - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
Caroline Ruhnau of SG Essen proved her eligibility for the gold medal in the Women’s 200m breast-stroke final on the last day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The aim of the German Championship is to identify key players to represent their country at the upcoming 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July
The 26-year-old Ruhnau won the 200m breast-stroke gold medal in the Open Class category. She clinched the title in 2 minutes and 27.60 seconds, staying only 0.01 seconds away from her following swimmer, Sarah Poewe. The 28-year-old Poewe of SV Nikar Heidelberg
followed her on the finishing wall, completing her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 27.61 seconds for the silver medal. They were followed by SV Nikar Heidelberg’s Sibylle Dalacker, who settled on the podium for the bronze medal, by posting a time of 2:30.48
minutes.
The German champion was 7.48 seconds slower than the world mark of Annamay Pierse, as the Canadian swimmer had posted a time of 2 minutes and 20.12 seconds to conquer the record gold medal. She was almost six seconds away from the European record of Nadja
Higl, who clocked a time of 2 minutes and 21.62 seconds at the same World Championships. Ruhnau was also unable to improve Brite Steven’s national record of 2 minutes and 25.33 seconds by almost two seconds.
Vanessa Grimberg and Laura Simon completed their swims in the fourth and fifth fastest place, by clocking a time of 2:31.63 and 2:33.23 minutes, respectively.
The sixth fastest spot was secured by Alina Bornemann of Charlottenburger Damen SV Nixe, who stayed 1.19 seconds away from the fifth fastest swimmer, submitting in a time of 2 minutes and 34.42 seconds. SV Wurzburg 05’s Karoline Degenhardt and SV Halle’s
Julia Willers settled as the seventh and eighth fastest swimmers on the wall, with timings of 2:34.87 and 2:35.34 minutes, respectively.
Moments later, Nicole Weber of SSV Trier and Maria Spies of SV Wfr. 1898 Hannover ended their swims in the ninth and tenth fastest places, producing a time of 2:35.87 and 2:36.29 minutes, respectively.
In the B-Final of the same event, 19-year-old Julia Dammann completed her swim in a fastest time of 2 minutes and 34.59 seconds. She was followed by Margarita Filimonceva and Selina Somogyi, who completed their swims to secure the second and third fastest
spot, in a time of 2:34.62 and 2:36.84 minutes, respectively.
Ruhnau was excited to triumph the national gold medal and expressed that she will try to exceed the expectations of her fans at the upcoming international meets.
The championship concluded after the last session, whereas, Germany Swimming will announce the names of their athletes to contest at the upcoming 2011 World Championships.
