Caroline Wozniacki, Francesca Schiavone successful in 1st round – US Open 2011
Top seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki moved into the second round at the 2011 US Open on Tuesday, 30th August after doing away with unseeded Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives in her opening round match at Flushing Meadows, New York U.S.A.
Taking close to ninety minutes, Wozniacki brushed off a slow start as she secured a 6-3, 6-1 win over her Spaniard opponent.
Playing Vives for the first time, Wozniacki opened serve in the opener only to have her each shot matched. Fighting past a deuce, the Dane was finally able to put herself on the scoreboard, followed closely by Vives. Holding her serve in the third game and battling past five deuces in perhaps the longest game of the match, Wozniacki finally capitalised on a breakpoint opportunity in the fourth game as she extended her lead to 3-1. From there on the set progressed on even terms with each player holding onto her serve. Losing only one point to a long forehand in the ninth game, Wozniacki served out the set at 5-3 as she went one up in the set score.
In almost forty five minutes, Wozniacki squandered four of five breakpoint opportunities as she rode a single one with three aces and sixteen winners to a 6-3 win.
Revitalized by her win, Wozniacki came down strong on the Spaniard in the second set as she set a flurry of powerful, well placed shots towards her opponent. Hitting only one and six winners, the Dane converted three of six breakpoint opportunities to her advantage as she clinched a breadstick win for herself, sealing her straight sets victory.
Wozniacki now moves on ahead to play either Arantxa Rus or Elena Vesnina in her bid for a maiden Grand Slam win.
Also joining Wozniacki in the second round was the 2011 French Open runner up, Italian Francesca Schiavone.  In a match that last well close to two hours, Schiavone survived a mid match lapse as she did away with Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva in three sets, securing a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win.
Schiavone now moves on ahead to play Mirjana Lucic in the in the second round. Lucic survived a mid match lapse of her own as she secured a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Aussie qualifier Marina Erakovic.
