Caroline Wozniacki: Third Time Lucky at 2011 Family Circle Cup
Current World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki reigned supreme at this year’s Charleston tournament, taking her fifteenth career title with a straight-sets victory over Russian tennis pro Elena Vesnina. The top-ranked Dane took her
first Family Circle Cup trophy last night, with a brisk 6-3, 6-2 win.
Despite several challenging matches against players such as Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Yanina Wickmayer, Wozniacki dismissed her title match opponent without much of an effort. She seemed elated by her first win at the venue,
saying, "I played aggressively today and everything worked for me. I was able to adapt my game to the clay. It's the first tournament on clay so I'm very happy the way it turned out, and it gives me some confidence I can play well on clay as well. I beat some
good players here, so I'm very satisfied." She also tweeted about her victory, saying, “Won my third title of the year today! So happy! Thanks for the support!”
Clay has been a bit of a challenge for Wozniacki, who generally produces her best results on hard courts. She seems to have found her footing, however, and is expected to improve her game even further over the next few years of
her career. This is her third appearance at the Family Circle Cup, where she lost the title to Sabine Lisicki in 2009. Last year, the player was forced to retire in her semi-final match against Vera Zvonareva, after sustaining a nasty ankle injury.
Elena Vesnina also had a remarkable run at this year’s Family Circle Cup, undoing seeded players such as Samantha Stosur, Julia Goerges and Shuai Peng. She also recorded her first WTA Top Five win here, by defeating Australian
Grand Slam runner-up Stosur. The player seems to be wowed by Wozniacki, saying, “Caroline really makes you play ... I would consider her the best player in the world. It’s really tough to play against her, believe me. Sometimes you feel she’s everywhere on
the court.”
This is also Wozniacki’s third title of the year, after she managed to decimate opponents to score wins at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open and the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open. Ten of her fifteen titles are from Premier events,
and she has won fifteen of the twenty-four title matches she has played so far. The player seems to be very confident in her own abilities, saying, “I feel confident, and I know I can win a (Grand) Slam tournament.”
Caroline Wozniacki will now be heading to Monaco, and has announced her intentions on Twitter, saying, “Made it to London ... Monaco here I come ;).” She will be playing an exhibition match with reigning French Open champion Francesca
Schiavone at Monte Carlo.
