Caroline Wozniacki: “Was a really tough match for me out there today” – Tennis News
Defending champion, Caroline Wozniacki, survived a scare against the Swedish tennis star, Sofia Arvidsson, at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 in a late night match on Monday. She found her momentum after the first set and ultimately pulled out the match with a
3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory against the world number 56 in the third round at this hard court tournament.
The former world number one found her momentum in the second set and then improved her ways in the final set to bag the match in two hours and 37 minutes at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The Danish number one stated in a social networking site after the match, “Was a really tough match for me out there today! But managed to pull it thru in 3 sets against Sofia_Arvidsson.”
Currently ranked 4th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Wozniacki lost her serve three times in the opening set to suffer a 3-6 loss.
Her performance appeared rusty throughout this match despite having a better first serve share. Wozniacki, however, got the breakthrough in the eleventh game of the second set, subsequently equalising the set scores. She then broke Arvidsson’s serve three
times to seal the deal in their seventh meeting.
The 21-year-old is eyeing to reclaim her top spot at the WTA rankings and is looking forward for her maiden career title this season. After enjoying her career best season last year which saw her lifting six titles, Wozniacki started her 2012 campaign at
the Apia International Sydney. However, she lost to the seventh seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the quarter-finals. Wozniacki then cruised to the final eight at the Australian Open before falling to the defending champion, Kim Clijsters.
The Dane then failed to defend her title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (lost to German ace, Julia Goerges, in the semi-finals) before entering this WTA Premier Mandatory event. Wozniacki is looking forward to re-ignite her spark on these Californian
hard courts. She slaughtered Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova, who upset Serena Williams in the pre-quarters at the Australian Open, in her opening round match with a bagel before encountering Arvidsson.
