Caroline Wozniacki advances to the Danish Open quarter-final
Number one seeded Caroline Wozniacki has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Danish Open after defeating Iveta Benesova in three sets on Thursday.
Wozniacki was a set down before she battled back to take the match 4-6, 6-2, and 6-0.
Both women had a difficult time holding serve in the first set, as only one of the game was held. Wozniacki herself was broken five times in the first set, losing 6-2.
After the first set Wozniacki seemed to channel the fans as she was able to hold her serve for the remainder of the match, while breaking Benesova twice over the next two sets.
Wozniacki, a native of Denmark, will be looking to impress the home fans at Farum Arena in Copenhagen for her quarter-final match against Germany’s Julie Goerges this Friday.
Goerges is the fifth seed in the tournament and is coming off of her first WTA victory in Austria just two weeks ago.
Joining Wozniacki and Goerges in the quarter-finals will be the sixth-seed Polona Hercog, who defeated Great Britain’s Anne Koethavong in three sets.
Romania’s Sorana Cirstea beat out Katrina Srebotnik in three sets, and Russian Anna Chakvetadze, who qualified for the tournament, advances to the quarters on a seven-match winning streak.
In the quarter-finals Li Na will go up against the eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber, Hercog will take on the red-hot Chakvetadze, and Clara Zakopalova is set to match-up against Cirstea.
The total prize for winning the Danish Open is $37,000.
The 20-year-old Wozniacki is currently ranked third in the world, and has reached the final of two tournaments so far this season. Wozniacki finished runner-up in the BNP Paribas Open, where she was defeated by Jelena Jankovic. She managed her first and only victory so far in 2010 with a win at the MPS Group Championship, where she defeated Olga Govortsova.
