Caroline Wozniacki and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova sail into the second round at 2011 Mutua Madrid Open
Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki eased past Japanese Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday to advance into the second round of 2011 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open in Spain.
Wozniacki made a strong start as she claimed four straight points on her opponent’ serve to make her first serve break of the match. She took her service games with ease and soon found herself in a very strong position in the match, leading the game score by 3-1. The Dane had another chance of breaking the serve in fifth game of the set which she successfully converted to earn an impassable 4-1 lead in the set. She held on to her next two serve games to take the opener.
The second set proved to be one sided as well as Wozniacki continued to display top quality tennis to down her opponent. She made the crucial serve break early in the set to establish firm control in the contest. Winner of 15 Women’s Tennis Association titles, Wozniacki required just over an hour to dispatch her opponent.
Ayumi Morita struggled to time the ball and committed a number of unforced errors in the process. Her on-court movement was a bit slow as she failed to cope with the Dane’s pace. Wozniacki did not allow a single break chance to her opponent and converted most of her chances to ensure her straight set victory.
"It means a lot," she said afterwards. "It's a big tournament and I'm very, very happy. It's pretty much a two-week event, and you have days in between like in the Grand Slams. Once again, I showed that I can play great tennis, and I've beaten some really good players this week."
Just few days back Wozniacki crushed Elena Vesnina to claim her third triumph of the season. Since her semi-final loss at the 2011 Australian Open, she has upped her game play significantly to reclaim her number one position in the WTA rankings. Dubai Duty Free, BNP Paribas Open and Charleston brought success for the WTA world number one. Wozniacki looked in the same great form in her opening match at the clay tournament as she made the challenger run for her money. In absence of injured Kim Clijsters, Serena and Venus Williams, Wozniacki is certainly a favourite to win the event
Meanwhile rising star from Russia, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova destroyed Jie Zheng of China 6-0, 6-1 in a match that lasted for only 48 minutes.
Pavlyuchenkova, who started the season on a positive note, struggled to find form in her last two tournaments at the tour. She will be hoping to live up to the expectations by reaching the final stages of the WTA tournament in Madrid.
