Caroline Wozniacki and Kim Clijsters pay their respect to Thailand
Current World Number 1 Caroline “Sunshine” Wozniacki and comeback queen Kim Clijsters are due to play the 84 World Tennis Invitation in Hua Hin together, and flew to the venue from Bangkok in order to compete in an exhibition match. They began their Thailand
trip at the Siriraj Hospital, where they autographed a tome of good wishes in front of a portrait of his Majesty the King. Wozniacki was accompanied on the trip by relatives and team members, while Kim Clijsters chose to leave her husband and daughter, Bryan
Lynch and Jada, in Bangkok.
The two players also stopped to meet the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at the Government House, and presented him with signed racquets. This was confirmed by Suwat Liptapanlop, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand. Liptapanlop revealed
that the players spent some time conversing with the Prime Minister about tennis and their respective countries. Abhisit Vejjajiva commended Wozniacki’s country, Denmark, on its environmental protection laws and global warming campaigns.
The Prime Minister also gave souvenir books to both Wozniacki and Clijsters. Kim, who wore a bright pink shirt, also brought handmade Belgian chocolates for the Prime Minister along with her signed racquet.
Tennis mama Clijsters (who has three US Open titles) also expressed a desire to visit a temple. Suwat Liptapanlop advised her to make a wish at the Wat Huay Mongkol, in order to help her win yet another Grand Slam title. The two players spent the day learning
about Thailand and taking part in many tourist activities, such as elephant rides.
The players spent the afternoon on a river cruise on the shores of the Chao Phraya, to get a taste of Thai life. Wozniacki was the centre of attention during the one hour ride, pulling in journalists and cameramen for interviews. She said, in an interview
with one of the reporters, “I'm glad to be here. I had the chance to visit the hospital and Government House to meet the Prime Minister.”
The Dane will play an exhibition match against Belgian Kim Clijsters at 5 pm.
