Caroline Wozniacki and Su-Wei Hsieh to play in the BMW Malaysian Open 2013 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, and the Defending Champion, Su-Wei Hsieh, will revisit Kuala Lumpur to take part in the BMW Malaysian Open, next year. The 10th ranked Dane and the Taiwanese professional
are the first two players to have signed the contract of featuring in the next edition of the tournament. The event is scheduled to be contested from February 25 to March 3, 2012.
The announcement was aired by the patron Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in a press release. He stated, “This passion also had to do with cultivating sportsmen and sportswomen from young, who will be advocates for Malaysia and future role
models for our younger generation to look up to. The BMW Malaysian Open has also given the younger generation a platform to showcase their talent in the sports arena, and this is vital in the growth of sports in the country.”
A 16-year-old local, Aslina Chua, is also awarded a wildcard to play in the qualifying round of the tournament which clearly shows the mindset of Malaysian Tennis Federation looking to flourish their players who could represent
them at elite platforms in foreseeable future.
The tournament was started in 2010 and it has become a crucial part of the sporting schedule of Malaysia since then. Every edition of the tournament has attracted mammoth crowd and generated humongous revenues that are used to
finance the grooming of youngsters.
Hsieh who won the tournament in 2012 was excited to represent her country again in the third edition of the tournament. She stated, “It's always good to come back to a place where I win a tournament.”
Wozniacki is a big inclusion in the squad which will be filled with elite names in the upcoming months. The wildcards will be announced near to the starting date of the tournament. It will be interesting to witness if the 25th
ranked Hsieh can continue to register breakthroughs in 2013 and save all her points at Malaysia. It’s not going to be an easy task at all especially with the inclusion of the 22-year-old Dane in the draw.
