Caroline Wozniacki beats Lucie Safarovato; grabs fifth season title – e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2011
World number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark won her fifth title for the season at the 2011 e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open with a 6-1, 6-4 score on Sunday. A defending champion at the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open Tournament, Wozniacki
made her way into the final where she defeated the Czech woman Lucie Safarova to secure her second straight title at the Copenhagen.
The Dane started her title defence playing American, Irina Falconi. Defeating the American in straight sets, Wozniacki had moved on to play her toughest match of the event against Angelique Kerber, who gave Wozniacki a tough fight
before allowing her to progress into the quarterfinals. From there on it was smooth sailing for the Dane, as she moved past Alberta Brianti and Mona Barthel in straight sets to setup a final clash with Safarova.
Coming into the match, Safarova enjoyed a 1-0 lead in career head-to-head series against Wozniacki. The pair’s last meeting had come in the second round of the 2010 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix with the Czech emerging as the winner
in two sets. Playing their second match, Wozniacki won her second title at the event, getting some revenge against the Czech for a loss in their previous match.
Superb service from the Dane in the opening set maintained her dominance on the courts. Wozniacki registered an impressive 87 percent win on her service as opposed to Safarova’s meagre 58 percent. Successfully converting two of
three break opportunities, Wozniacki was able to clinch a breadstick victory for herself to go one up in the set score.
The Dane carried her winning ways into the second set and then moved past the more solid and powerful Czech in 45 minutes to conclude her straight sets victory. Improving her service winning percentage to 72% along with four aces,
Safarova bounced back in the second set. Converting one of the break opportunities, Safarova was able to tie the score at 4-all. Although the Czech pro showed some of her great tennis in the second set, she could not cause any upset to the far more solid Wozniacki,
allowing her to take the second set with a 6-4 score line.
Talking about her performance, Wozniacki said, “I'm so happy to win this tournament in my home country - it's a special feeling, this is my 17th title and last time I played here I had eight titles, so I've more than doubled that
- it's a good feeling. The last three matches my game has been at a very high level and I'm looking forward to going to London, and practicing and preparing for Wimbledon."
Wozniacki had earlier won four titles title in the year, winning them at Dubai, Indian Wells, Charleston and Brussels. Wozniacki next plays at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, as the top seed.
