Caroline Wozniacki beats Sofia Arvidsson in round two – New Haven Open 2012
World number eight, Caroline Wozniacki, scuttled past the Swede superstar, Sofia Arvidsson, in the second round of the New Haven Open to continue her emphatic run at Yale that has featured 19 consecutive wins for her now.
The Dane ousted the 28-year-old Swede in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2 to qualify for the quarter-final of the tournament. She holds a monumental head-to-head lead of 7-2 against the 51st ranked Swede athlete and that was
her second triumph in the current season having defeated Arvidsson in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in March.
Wozniacki commenced the match in an aggressive fashion. She held her serve after a bit of trouble but smashed three mind-startling winners to win a breakpoint in the second game and post a lead of 2-0 upfront.
A swap of breakpoints kept the third seed Dane in hold of the proceedings as she moved on to consolidate her lead further with a serve hold in the fifth game. Arvidsson looked good at the start and revived her shot making in the
seventh game that helped her win a breakpoint back and diminish the trail to just 3-4.
No more breakpoints in the set enforced a tie-breaker round into play and the 22-year-old Dane inched ahead with her class and pure timing. She delicately placed a winner to close the opening set at a high-note.
First four games of the second set witnessed no drama at all. Both players held their serves and posted a score line of 2-2. However, the Dane launched an onslaught in the second half of the set and clinched two back-to-back breakpoints
to win the encounter.
She commented about her following rival, "We know each other really well. She's a year younger but we travelled to all the same junior tournaments and played many matches against each other. I know the way she's playing, and she
knows how I'm playing. It's two different styles as well - she's the defensive player and I'm the offensive player going for my shots. It's going to be a really good match."
Next up for the Dane is the sixth seeded Slovakian, Dominika Cibulkova, in the quarter-final draw.
