Caroline Wozniacki beats Virginie Razzano to reach the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki was on cruise control as she ousted France’s Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-3, taking a little over an hour and six minutes.
While the British crowd at All England Tennis Club huddled for deciding whether to cheer World No.1 or the Frenchwoman, who recently scattered by the death of her fiancé,
the Dane had already broken the Frenchwoman in the opening game as her sheer power again stupefied her opponent.
The top-seeded Dane, who is bidding to win her first major title, almost lost the next game but held serve thanks to a devastating forehand down the line and hardly looked
back, clinching the opener in just 26 minutes.
Wozniacki clinched the opener with six winners and 81 percent on her first serve. Moreover, she won a whopping 77 percent on her first serve, 67 percent of points on her
second serve and a total of 14 of 26 points on return. In contrast, Razzano finished off her straight loss with 43 percent of points on service, 50 percent of points on her second serve and a total of 4 of 16 points on return.
Nevertheless, Razzano did break for 3-3 in the second set to expose some chinks in Wozniacki’s amour, offering her fan’s a glimpse of hope that she can beat the Dane on
grass. However, the Dane did not lose her concentration and navigated her way through to the third round with a 6-1, 6-3 win in just one hour.
Winning her second straight match at the tournament, Wozniacki has improved her year-to-date win/loss mark to 47/8 matches and furthermore, she has also extended her match
winning streak to 5-0 against the Frenchwoman in their head-to-head series.
Standing in a way of her fourth round spot is the Australian, Jarmila Gajdosova, who beat Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic to set up a clash with the Dane for the third
time in her career.
Gajdosova is 26/13 for the year and unless she proves otherwise, Wozniacki will reach the fourth round without much fuss.
