Caroline Wozniacki blasts at Martina Navratilova’s criticism – Tennis News
Danish number one Caroline Wozniacki demurred the tennis legend Martina Navratilova's analysis. The Czech veteran criticised Wozniacki’s top ranking in a press conference at the Australian Open.
"Clearly nobody feels Wozniacki is a true number one," the 55-year-old was quoted.
The 18-time Grand Slam titlist, Navratilova criticised the ranking system and said that her fellow citizen, Petra Kvitova, should have been the world number one last year. The Czech number one conquered Wimbledon, third of the four Grand Slam events and lifted five more title last year. The famous star thinks that Wozniacki earned the top spot due to the numbers and not the quality of her game.
Currently ranked number four in the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) rankings, Wozniacki lost respect she had for the legendary figure after her statement. She also emphasized that the Czech was number one when there were few dominating stars. The Dane also referred that Navratilova ruled the tennis world when the women’s tennis was less dense.
"I think I have to be honest, lost a little bit of respect. Because I respect what they have achieved," the Dane added. "I think I would never say Martina was number one when there was no-one playing... I mean that would be disrespectful.”
Disappointed Wozniacki also uttered her views about the renowned players who are now commentators. She stated that these commentators are paid for making these types of statements and it’s their job.
"They always have to make comments, and that's what they get paid for - to be comments, because they are not playing any more," Wozniacki said.
Wozniacki lost her top spot in the WTA rankings at the Australian Open when Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka crushed Maria Sharapova from Russia in the final showdown. She secured the number one rank for 68 weeks after enjoying a successful 2011 season which saw her grabbing six WTA titles. The 21-year-old triumphed titles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship, BNP Paribas Open, Family Circle Cup, Brussels Ladies Open, Sony Ericsson Open and New Haven Open last year. She also secured final berths in other tournaments and made final four appearances at the Australian Open and the US Open last season.
