Caroline Wozniacki bounces back against Shuai Peng for title at Brussels Ladies Open
World number one Caroline Wozniacki capped a superb week by claiming the 2011 Brussels Ladies Open title on Saturday. The Dane came back powerfully from a set deficit to defeat the Chinese tennis ace Shuai Peng with a 2-6. 6-3,
6-3 score line in the final as she claimed her fourth title of the year.
Top-seeded Dane got into aggressive mode at the right moment to defy the challenge of her Chinese opponent and secured a hard-earned win in the end. Wozniacki did not look comfortable as she could not catch up with her opponents
pace. Peng on the other hand was the more solid of the two, showing powerful strokes along with a pretty hefty serve.
The first set saw breaks traded between the players until Peng held her service game at 2-2 to lead 4-2. Wozniacki was on serve to see if she could find any gears to stay in the set, but a long and wild backhand from the world
number one granted Peng the first set. She had fired two aces, 77 percent of first serve, winning 58 percent of points behind them.
However, the second set saw the world number one putting up an offensive barrier hitting powerful shots from different places on the court as she went up 5-3 in a while. Now with several chances to serve out the second set, Wozniacki
needed only one point to seal the deal with a 6-3 score line. A delighted crowd applauded knowing that the final set would be the set that would contain the better shots of the day.
The final set went by in a blink of an eye as Peng’s ship sunk fast. The Dane’s control and impressive heavy topspin hitting sealed the match in just two hours and thirty five minutes.
Wozniacki conclude the match with three aces and six double faults. Moreover, she won 58 percent of points on her service, 47 percent of points on return and 52 percent of points in total to claim the match.
By virtue of this victory, the world’s top-ranked player has improved to 16-10 in WTA finals, including 4-2 this year. Wozniacki has also claimed her third victory in four meetings with the Chinese and received a prize for $ 103,000.
Despite winning sixteen career titles, the Dane has not won any of the major tournaments yet. She was the runner-up at the 2009 U.S. Open where she lost to ultimate champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium in straight sets.
Wozniacki will begin her quest for the Grand Slam title next week at French Open with a first round match against Japanese tennis ace Kimiko Date-Krumm.
