Caroline Wozniacki bounces back to oust Angelique Kerber in semis – BNP Paribas Open 2013
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, made an epic comeback from a set down to outclass the fourth seed, Angelique Kerber, in a three-set thriller at the BNP Paribas Open 2013 on Friday. She notched up a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory
against the 25-year-old to power into the final showdown at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event taking place in Indian Wells, United States.
Seeded eighth at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Wozniacki made a sloppy entry. However, she ignited her spark and eventually overpowered the German number one in their sixth meeting. As a result, the Dane not only avenged her
all three losses which came last season but also levelled the head-to-head series by 3-3 against Kerber.
The world number six, Kerber stormed into this match. She reeled off four games before the Danish star could come on the score sheet. Apart from losing her serve in the sixth game, the German stayed calm and pocketed the proceeding
two games. She dusted away one out of two breakpoints she came across and cashed three out of four break chances to cash the opener with a 6-2 win.
Wozniacki re-bounded in the following set. She gifted away her serve in the opening game but recovered in the fourth game. The Dane then held her remaining serves with poise and got the breakthrough in the last game, eventually
grabbing the equaliser by winning six games to four. She superbly warded off five out of six breakpoints she came across and converted two out of three break chances to her advantage.
Currently ranked 10th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki maintained her intensity in the deciding set. With help of two breaks, she leaped to a 4-1 lead. Apart from levelling the scores in the 10th game,
the Dane held her composure and stayed in contention. She availed her fourth break chance in the last game and clinched the decider with a 7-5 score line.
Next in queue for Wozniacki is the conqueror of an all-Russian battle between Maria Sharapova and Maria Kirilenko. The second seeded Sharapova currently leads 4-2 in the head-to-head series against her compatriot.
