Caroline Wozniacki bows out to Bojana Jovanovski in second round – Roland Garros 2013
Caroline Wozniacki was edged out by the Serbian challenger Bojana Jovanovski in straight sets on Wednesday. She suffered a 6-7(2), 3-6 loss against the Serb to exit from the major clay court tournament taking place in Paris, France, the Roland Garros.
The Danish number one made a convincing start but failed to find her rhythm in the tie-breaker. She eventually stepped off steam and exited from this second of the four Grand Slam events. As a result, Jovanovski levelled the head-to-head series by 2-2 against
Wozniacki.
The 22-year-old commented in a courtside interview after losing the battle, “I wasn't consistent enough out there. She was hitting the ball every time and going for her shots, and I didn't get to play the game I wanted to. I didn't get her to move around
enough. You know, then all of a sudden you're in trouble out there. It hasn't been the best clay season for me. Obviously I would have liked to play longer and play better, but it wasn't to be, so now I have to go back and practice and try to prepare for Wimbledon.
It's always tough to say, but I definitely feel like clay is probably not my favorite surface.”
Both contestants made a strong entry at the Stade Roland Garros. Wozniacki gifted away her serve in the seventh game and suffered the initial loss. However, she quickly snatched her break back and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. The Dane lost her focus
in it and subsequently suffered a 6-7(2) loss.
The 10th seed, Wozniacki failed to find her rhythm and lost her opening serve. The Dane recovered in the fifth game but lost her serve again, eventually losing the set with a 3-6 score line.
Summing up the Dane’s performance, Wozniacki clobbered a better first serve share of 70 per cent as compared to her rival’s 68 per cent. The Dane also spilled fewer unforced errors but failed to ward off four out of seven breakpoints she faced which cost
her match.
Jovanovski will next face off the Russian contender, Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the round of 32. The Russian made an epic comeback from a set down to outsmart Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 score line.
The top seed, Serena Williams, will accompany Jovanovski in the third round. She thrashed the local wild card entrant, Caroline Garcia, with a breadstick to advance.
