Caroline Wozniacki breaks back into the Top-10 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, couldn’t claim the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions at Sofia on Sunday despite being the top seed contestant and reaching the grand finale unbeaten. She fall victim to an upset
at the hands of the former world number three, Nadia Petrova, who shot up to the 12th rank after registering an unbeaten run in Bulgaria.
Wozniacki stated, "Nadia played very well. Her service games were tough, and in the rallies I tried to push her back and make her move, but it just didn't go my way. In the first set I felt like we had a lot of close games, but
in the second set I was forcing myself too much and made too many unforced errors."
The Dane further added, "I would have loved to win today, but I didn't, and I've had a good week. I played some good tennis during the week, which I'm very happy about." Four wins for the 22-year-old Dane in the tour of Sofia yielded
her a spot in the Top-10 category. She swapped places with the number one Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli, who once had an opportunity to be the alternative player for the Women Tennis Association Championships that was contested in Istanbul.
Wozniacki started the year as the number one player but her dismal form in the Australian Open at Melbourne dethroned the Dane in the first month of the new calendar year. She lost in the first match at the Qatar Ladies Open as
well and that further assisted her deteriorating ranking. She was undone in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and the semi-final appearance at Sony Ericsson Open at Miami forced her to drop more points.
The Dane failed to retain the title at her home soil; losing out to the fifth ranked German star, Angelique Kerber, in the grand finale. Cheap exits in Rome, French Open, Eastbourne and Wimbledon Championships further pushed her
down the ranks. The poor performance continued at the US Open where she fall victim to a first round upset. However, the recovery started in Seoul where she grabbed the Hansol Korea Open title and coupled it with a quarter-final show at the Toray Pan Pacific
Open in Tokyo. She marched on and won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and her semi-final victory at Tournament of Champions confirmed her comeback in the Top-10 players at the end of the season.
