Caroline Wozniacki breezes into the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open
Top seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki downed Serb Bojana Jovanovski in straight sets on Tuesday. She registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 19-year-old Serb to advance into the third round of the 2011 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open.
World number one Wozniacki took one hour and forty-three minutes to down the Serb, ranked 57 places down her, in their first meeting. After earning the victory at Park Manzanares, the Dane took the lead in her head-to-head series
against Jovanovski by 1-0.
20-year-old is in her top form this season as she clinched the titles at Dubai, Indian Wells and Charleston. She also made final berths at Doha and Stuttgart before storming into this WTA Premier Mandatory event. She trashed Japanese
Ayumi Morita in the first round and after dumping Jovanovski, she extended her straight sets streak for eight matches.
Wozniacki made a terrible start in the opening set and lost her serve in the very first game. She was trailing 1-3 when she got back on track and broke the Serbian’s serve in the sixth game to square the results at 3-3. The Dane
then picked up her weaknesses to hold her remaining serves plausibly. Later she converted another breakpoint opportunity to her advantage in the last game to clinch the set with a 6-4 win.
Danish ace kept momentum rolling into the second set and held her serve in the first game by her awesome agility. She smoothly held her remaining serves until the fifth game where she failed to stop massive stroke from the Serb
and eventually lost her serve. However, Wozniacki went on savage mode to win the next three games in a row. She then exchanged breaks in the last two games to seal the set by winning six games to Jovanovski’s four.
The Dane rolled balls into court and maintained her consistency level in the match. Despite producing a lower first serve share of 68 percent as compared to Serb’s 79 percent, she registered an acceptable 52 percent win on it.
Wozniacki clobbered twelve winners and converted five out of seven breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to take the match 6-4, 6-4.
"Jovanovski is very young and I hadn't played her before," Wozniacki said. "She made some unforced errors, although later in the match she got better and didn't make it easy for me."
She will next face the winner of the match between Russian wild card enterer Dinara Safina and German Julia Gorges. The Russian dumped Spanish qualifier Nuria Llagostera Vives and Gorges upset 14th seeded Estonian Kaia
Kanepi, both in three set thrillers.
