Caroline Wozniacki breezes past Arantxa Rus to reach round two – KDB Korea Open 2012
Top seed, Caroline Wozniacki, crippled the Dutch challenger, Arantxa Rus, with a breadstick at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Tuesday. She nudged up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the 21-year-old to secure a place in the second round at this
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level event taking place in Seoul, South Korea.
Wozniacki remained on track to bid for her maiden title this season after she crushed the Dutchwoman in just above an hour. The contestants last fought each other at the US Open previous season and after stealing the show at this outdoor hard court event,
the Dane improved to 2-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Rus.
"I definitely played better today than I have for a while," Wozniacki stated in a courtside interview after pocketing the match. "I've been practicing hard and I'm happy to see the results from that. I'm happy to be through. I'm just taking it one match
at a time."
The former world number one, Wozniacki stormed into the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. She broke Rus’ opening serve and cruised to a 3-0 lead. After the Dutch came on the score sheet in the fourth game, Wozniacki pocketed the last three games and clinched
the opener with a breadstick.
Currently ranked 11th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki maintained her intensity in the following set. She winded up four games in a row to take an unassailable lead over her opponent. The Dane then smoothly held her remaining serves and
eventually sealed the set by winning six games to two.
On the whole, the Danish number one brilliantly warded off all three breakpoints she came across and cashed in all four break chances to prevail. She also fully capitalised on several unforced errors the Dutch coughed and produced a better first serve share
of 73 per cent. Wozniacki also impressively marked 28 out of 37 points on it and finished the deal with 60 points.
Next in queue for Wozniacki is the French qualifier, Caroline Garcia, who upset Romania’s Alexandra Cadantu in straight sets to set up this epic clash.
