Caroline Wozniacki breezes past Daniela Hantuchova to enter quarters – London Olympics 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, stomped over the Slovakian star, Daniela Hantuchova, in straight sets at the London Olympics 2012 on Wednesday. She nudged up a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the 29-year-old to cruise into the final eight at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, Great Briton.
The eighth seeded Dane displayed top notch performance to outclass Hantuchova in their fifth encounter at this major sports event held after every four years. After stealing the spotlight, Wozniacki not only avenged her loss at the French Open last season but also improved to a 4-1 lead in the head-to-head series against the former world number five.
Wozniacki stated in a social networking site after pocketing the match:
“Really happy to be thru to the quarterfinals! Won my match today 6-4 6-2 :) and great support from the Danish handball team.”
The 22-year-old stormed into Games of x*x Olympiads. She drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. Despite squandering her edge in the very next game, Wozniacki held her composure and got the breakthrough in the seventh game. She capitalised on her two break chances to seal the opener with a 6-4 win.
Currently ranked eighth in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki went berserk in the second set. She blasted exquisite forehands to reel off the opening four games in a row before Hantuchova could hold on. The Dane broke her rival’s serve once more and clicked the set with a 6-2 success.
Wozniacki will square off against her fellow former world number one Serena Williams, who won her 14th Grand Slam title in Wimbledon three weeks ago.
The Danish star commented about her next match up against the American number one:
"Serena is playing really well. She played unbelievable today. You definitely have to go out and play your best tennis to beat her."
The fourth seeded American devastated Russia’s Vera Zvonareva with a breadstick and a bagel to set up this clash.
Earlier, the top seed Victoria Azarenka earned the fame after outfoxing Russia’s Nadia Petrova. She recorded a 7-6(6), 6-4 victory against the 16th seed and set up a date with the German number one Angelique Kerber.
