Francesca Schiavone, enjoying an Indian summer in her professional life, is a wiry powerhouse whose topspin and volleys along with excellent ground strokes are highly famous on the tour. Moreover, her single-handed backhand and her drop shot are also equally delightful to watch.
The professional tennis player from Italy, who was a surprising champion at the clay court French Open in Roland Garros this season, broke into the top ten on the very first occasion in her twelve-year career after her French Open victory. The charismatic Italian is currently ranked number six in the South African WTA World Tour ranking list. Her opening set versus Caroline showed why Schiavone is such a powerful player on the tour.
The world number one Caroline, however, took the next two sets and proved her solid court tactics and her sporting aptitude to outclass even the most resilient of foes.
Between them, the two players turned up the heat for the enthusiastic packed crowd; however, Schiavone was forced into committing back to back errors as Caroline smashed the ball to the very margins of the court. The Italian next took only two more games for the rest of the match, and as a result, Caroline confirmed her spot in the semi-final round of the WTA Tournament, exhibiting powerful and superior tennis.
In the final four battle, the world number one Caroline from Denmark may have the opportunity of a rematch versus Kim Clijsters, who had to fight hard against Victoria Azarenka in a late night match on Thursday.
The Belgian tennis sensation missed the second set, littering her game with double faults and over-long forehands, just as the mother of two-and-a-half year old Jada had versus Jelena Jankovic in her first match in Doha.
She is freshly back on the tour from her foot surgery and is playing in her first tournament since winning the year’s final Grand Slam, the US Open in New York. Therefore, she has not completely recovered and her game is still a bit rusty; however, she is likely to improve with every match at the WTA Tournament.
Doha, though, could prove to be Caroline’s moment to prove her worth and at last surpass one of those Grand Slam winners. There are few other players in the championship who appear likely to keep pace with the Dane except probably the contender who has been here all the season: Vera Zvonareva of Russia.
The day after she earned the number one ranking, the professional tennis player from Russia, Vera also improved her ranking to number three in the world and both of them now enjoy the top ranking on the tour.
In fact, they are also most likely to develop a rivalry on par with the Williams sisters and the Belgian pair. Both of them are currently tied at 3-3 in their head-to-head encounters and stand two apiece in clashes in 2010, two in the final four and two in title battles.
Just as Caroline has made her way into the semi-final round in Doha, the Russian sensation has done it even without missing a single set on her way.
Until the final round robins are contested, they will not be sure of whether they will face each other in the semi-final or in case both of them win, in the title battle. It looks appropriate that it should be the latter.
Lose or win, though, it cannot be long before the right-hander Caroline wins one of the big tournaments in the calendar to put the seal on her top ranking, if not in the WTA Tournament this week, then in the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne.
Certainly all signs show that the Danish star is here to stay for long. She has already proved a lot in terms of her sporting flair and talent with her consistency and superb work ethics, and these qualities will definitely ensure that she continues to improve on her game.
