Caroline Wozniacki confident on a successful title defence in Indian Wells – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, is all set to shut her critics with a successful title defence in Indian Wells. The tournament starts in California on Wednesday with a mammoth prize money of $US 11 million on stake.
It will be played on hard courts and high seed players have a Bye in the first round including the fourth ranked defending champion from Denmark.
Mentioning about her aims of repeating the heroic performance of last year, she stated, “Everyone has things to defend or not to defend. It's just about playing. You will have more points at some tournaments, a little bit less
at some, so it evens out in the end.”
She played an exhibition match against the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, at the Madison Square Garden on Monday and enjoyed her time out there. Her boyfriend, world number one golfer, Rory Mcllroy, also played a cameo
to win her a point in a friendly encounter. However, she lost the match; it was still something that will prove to be a good practice session before a major onslaught in the official tournament.
The reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, who dethroned the Dane from her yearlong number one spot will the strongest contender of the tournament. She is still unbeaten in 2012 with 17 wins already. She has participated
in three tournaments this year and won all of them including the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. The other two titles include the season-opener in Sydney and Qatar Total Open.
On a question about Indian Wells, she stated, “Health is the most important thing. If I'm healthy I can produce good tennis.” She was suffering from an injury that forced her to pull out of Dubai Duty Free Championships but the
recent update suggests that she has recovered from it. It is good for the flare of tennis that all big guns playing the tournament with 100 per cent match fitness; so, the spectators at the arena and at home watching live on their television sets are not disappointed
at all.
Other strong contenders for the title include the former world number one, Maria Sharapova, and the young superstar from the Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova, who is currently third in the world rankings. It is going to be a mesmerizing
tournament provided that the top seed players don’t face an early round exits and develop a mammoth quarter-final draw onwards.
