Caroline Wozniacki defeats Irina Falconi in straight sets at the 2011 Family Circle Cup
Current World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki scored a swift and graceful victory over her American opponent Irina Falconi, defeating the qualifier in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 with two fries to win her opening match at the 2011 Family
Circle Cup. The top seed received a bye in the first round, and this was her first contest at the Charleston event. Wozniacki dismissed Falconi in less than an hour.
The Danish player first ascended to the top spot at the end of last year, and has been harangued by reporters and media who consider her unworthy of her World Number 1 position due to the fact that she has yet to win a Grand Slam
title. The player is, however, just 20 years old and has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association for just over five years. She has already amassed fourteen career titles in this short time.
Irina Falconi, on the other hand, qualified for the tournament by defeating opposition in the qualifying singles at Charleston. She is also 20 years old, but is ranked much lower than Wozniacki at World Number 128. However, Falconi
turned pro less than a year ago in 2010, and has made remarkable progress for a player who has minimal experience. She is right handed, and has not won any career titles yet.
The match was a singularly easy one for Caroline Wozniacki, who barely broke a sweat as she used her trademark forehands to force Falconi into running all over the court. She played a flawless game with no double faults and one
ace, and also converted five of six break points successfully. The Dane herself was never driven to break point. She concluded the second round match with a whopping 68 per cent of the total points played in the match, and dismisses Falconi in her first showing
at the prestigious Family Circle Cup.
Wozniacki will now face either Anastasia Rodionova of Australia, or fifteenth seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic in her third round match at the Family Circle Cup this year.
