Caroline Wozniacki defeats Yanina Wickmayer; breezes into last eight at Internazionali BNL d’Italia
Top seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki trashed former top fifteen, Belgian Yanina Wickmayer with a breadstick on Thursday. She warded off late resistance from the 21-year-old Belgian to advance into the quarter-finals of the 2011 Internazionali
BNL d’Italia, a clay court tournament held in Rome, Italy.
World number one Wozniacki displayed top notch performance at Foro Italico where she triumphed over world number 24 Belgian in one hour and forty-nine minutes. She recently downed Wickmayer at Stuttgart in a three set thriller
and this time, the Dane perfected her gameplay and earned a straight set victory to extend her lead in their head-to-head series by 3-0.
20-year-old thrashed into the opening set and held her serve in the first game through exquisite forehands from her arsenal of skills. The Belgian held her serve in the proceeding game but Wozniacki went on savage mode after it
as she reeled off next five games in a row. As a result, the Dane clinched the first set with a breadstick in thirty-eight minutes.
She hammered eleven winners and registered an amazing 81 percent win on her slightly lower first serve share. Wozniacki saved both breakpoints and converted two out of eight breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
The Dane was trailing 0-40 in her opening serve when she showed her true colours and defensive skills to win this second game. She then found the coveted break in the third game and took the lead by 2-1. Despite her awesome from,
the younger one lost her serve with triple breakpoints in the eighth game to level the scores at 4-4. Wozniacki held her remaining serves plausibly and drag the set to tie-breaker where she prevailed to seal the set with a 7-6(4) win.
Her 74 percent first serve share was much better than the Belgian’s 69 percent and she earned an impressive 75 percent win on it. The Dane saved three out of four breakpoints faced and converted one out of three breakpoint opportunities
to her advantage.
Wozniacki is in her top form this season as she won the titles at Dubai, Indian Wells and Charleston and she was the finalist at Doha and Stuttgart. She entered this WTA Premier 5 event confidently and earned a bagel against Australian
qualifier Anastasia Rodionova in her opening round match.
Up next for the Dane is the fifth seed and twice runner up, Serb Jelena Jankovic. A former world number one, Jankovic rallied past Spanish qualifier Anabel medina Garrigues in troublesome three sets to reach this spot. Wozniacki
on the other hand has yet to lose a set and would be more confident than her.
