Caroline Wozniacki delighted despite the final loss in Sofia – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, is happy with how her season ended despite losing in the final showdown at the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions last week.
The Danish number one saw a disastrous season this year. She started the circuit standing at number one in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings. However, with her dismal show of tennis, she moved down the rankings. After crashing out by
Irina Camelia Begu in the opening round from US Open, Wozniacki fell out from Top 10.
However, she re-focused her strategy and lifted her game after that. The Dane captured her first year-to-date title at the Hansol Korea Open, a WTA International event taking place in Seoul, South Korea. She conquered third seeded Kaia Kanepi with a bagel
in the title-round.
Wozniacki then held her composure and secured a quarter-final berth at the Toray Pan Pacific Open (lost to third seed Agnieszka Radwanska). She then powered into the third round at the China Open (lost to fifth seed Angelique Kerber in three sets).
In mid October, the Danish star unleashed her true colours again at the Kremlin Cup, a WTA Premier tournament taking place in Moscow. She stunned top seeded Aussie, Samantha Stosur, in a three-set thriller to capture her second title this season.
The 22-year-old maintained consistency in her game at the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions last week. She conquered Su-Wei Hsieh, Roberta Vinci and Daniela Hantuchova in round robin matches. In the semi-finals, Wozniacki devastated eighth seeded Tsvetana
Pironkova with a breadstick to set up a date with second seeded Nadia Petrova.
Wozniacki bowed out to the former world number three in brutal straight sets in one hour and 27 minutes. However, she was delighted with what she accomplished this week.
The Danish top ranked star stated in a courtside interview after her loss in the title-round:
"I'm very pleased with how I finished the season. I feel like I'm playing very good tennis again, and that I've come back to the game I'm winning many matches with. I'm very much looking forward to the new season as well - but right now it's about having
a nice holiday, and then coming back and practicing hard for that!"
After her final appearance in Sofia, the Dane broke back into the Top 10 at the WTA Premium Rankings. She conquered 18 of her last 21 matches and is looking forwards to carry her rhythm in the next season.
