Caroline Wozniacki dismisses Jarmila Gajdosova in 2nd round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
World number one and top seed Caroline Wozniacki fended off the Australian Jarmila Gajdosova in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. After duelling for two hours and eight minutes on outdoor hard courts of the Ariake
Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan, Dane Wozniacki found it a tad bit difficult to knock out the Australian underdog Gajdosova, winning 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3 on Tuesday the 27th of September.
Kicking off the first set was the number one seed Wozniacki, after winning the toss and she was successfully able to place herself on the score board at 1-0. Trailing behind her was the Australian, who is currently ranked at world
number 34 and she too was on the score board at 1-1.
However in the next three games Wozniacki brought her agame and hammered her famous technique of serve-break-serve to reel off with a lead of 4-1. She then again broke Gajdosova in the second last game to score a 5-1 and she smashed
two successive aces to clog 30-love during her serve of the last game, she now only needed two more aces, however, Gajdosova scored a point but after that, Wozniacki smashed two consecutive aces to bag the opening set.
Opting to serve for the second serve was Gajdosova and the two matched a blow for a blow to round off the scoreboard at 2-2 during the first four games then at 3-3. The score was again squared at 5-5 but after the players had broken
each other once in the seventh game and the other was in the tenth game when Gajdosova broke Wozniacki. In the following two games the players held serve and the set was pushed into a tie breaker.
The strong front put up by the Australian continued well into the tiebreaker. As she matched blow by blow with the reigning world number one, the two locked in a series of breaks and holds and the pair kept the scoreboard tied
for the first six points. Capitalizing on a long forehand from the Dane, the Aussie reeled off three straight points to go up 6-3. Although Wozniacki was able to reduce the deficit to 4-6, she was unable to overpower Gajdosova as the latter broke the Dane
for the third time to clinch a 7-4 victory.
Amidst the decisive set neither of the players wanted to give anything away and the score progressed on even terms at 2-2 then 3-3 in the first six games. By the end of the sixth game Wozniacki wanted to cut the goose chase and
broke her adversary for the last time in the eighth game. By holdingher serve in the ninth, she was able to secure a place in the third round of the event.
