Caroline Wozniacki dismisses Yanina Wickmayer to reach pre-quarters – London Olympics 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, outfoxed the Belgian star, Yanina Wickmayer, in a three-set thriller at the London Olympics 2012 on Monday. She nudged up a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory against the world number 31 to secure a spot in the round of 16
at Games of the x*x Olympiad in London, United Kingdom.
The eighth seed stayed focused throughout the battle to carve out the victory in their sixth encounter. After stealing the show, Wozniacki not only improved to a 6-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against the Belgian but also progressed into the third
round at this grass court event.
"Yanina went out there and played some very good tennis. I really had to dig deep to win that one," the ecstatic Dane was quoted in a courtside interview after bagging the match. "I'm really pleased how I managed to come back in the third set and get a lead
at the start and win that long game, which I think was 13 deuces. I think that really made the difference today."
Wozniacki stepped into the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club with conviction. She drew the first blood in the third game and put her nose ahead. Regardless of losing her edge in the very next game, the Dane broke her rival’s serve again in the seventh
game and eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to four.
The 22-year-old Belgian made a stunning reply in the following set and broke Wozniacki’s opening serve to jump to a 3-0 lead. She held her remaining serves through angled shots and pulled out the equaliser with a 6-3 win.
Ranked eighth in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Wozniacki re-gained her early momentum and ascendancy in the final set. She earned the desiderated break in the second game and subsequently leaped to a 3-0 before Wickmayer could hold
on. The Dane smashed exquisite forehands and backhands to keep her remaining serves, consequently pocketing the decider with a 6-3 success.
Next up for the Danish number one is the Slovakian star, Daniela Hantuchova, who slew France’s Alize Cornet with a bagel to set up this battle.
