Caroline Wozniacki dissatisfies in 2012 – Tennis Special
Caroline Wozniacki ended two successive years (2010 and 2011) as the number one player in the world. However, she slipped down to the 10th rank towards the end of the current season which was a major disappointment for all the fans across the globe.
The 22-year-old Dane has never won a Grand Slam title in her entire career to date and a similar result was expected of her this year as well. However, the performances in the other tournaments were extremely average and never met the standards set in the
previous year.
Wozniacki was firm to fight for her top spot despite no Grand Slam trophy under her belt. However, her determination crashed away in 2012; leaving her with just two titles in the season compared to six trophies in the last year.
The misery in the Grand Slam continued for the 10th ranked Dane who lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, third round of the French Open, opening round of Wimbledon and the US Open as well.
Despite a poor start to the season, the Dane was able to restore some respect by ending strongly. She captured the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and coupled it with a fantastic unbeaten run at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. She didn’t lose a single match at
the Tournament of Champions until the final upset where the Russian former world number three, Nadia Petrova, outfoxed her completely.
One thing that didn’t change about Wozniacki was that she continued to be a fun-loving character at the courts. Moreover, the coach-firing and golfer-dating also continued in the recent season. She continued to hit the headlines with her aggressive on-court
attitude towards umpires as well.
The surprise exit of an experienced coaching personality, Ricardo Sanchez, was a shock to everyone. The Dane reverted back to her father as the coach. It didn’t allow her to push out of the comfort zone and strive for the betterment of technique and stamina.
Something has to change for the 22-year-old Dane who is still hunting for her first Major trophy of the career. The New Year always brings a layer of hopes and Wozniacki is also lining up expectations of breaking the golden duck of Grand Slam titles.
However, considering the recent form of Top-4 players, it will be extremely difficult for the under-pressure Dane to defy the odds and shut the critics in the following season.
