Caroline Wozniacki downs Jarmila Gajdosova to reach the fourth round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Top Dane, Caroline Wozniacki moved into the fourth round at the Wimbledon Championships 2011 in Wimbledon on Saturday, when she defeated the twenty seventh seeded Jarmila Gajdosova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
The pair had met twice before, in Tokyo – Japan Open in 2008 and Indian Wells in 2007, with Wozniacki winning in straight sets before going on to clinch her third victory here at the Wimbledon. Gajdosova is flexible and, although her impressive two-handed backhand was effective in the early stages, she ran out of ideas in the ninth game as Wozniacki gained an early break.
The Dane withstood a barrage of power from French Virginie Razzano last night before coming through in straight sets and looked more comfortable, cementing her break with a stunning forehand. Wozniacki was well in control by now and it was no surprise when she broke again for a 5-2 lead courtesy of another error from Gajdosova.
The Australian put up a more of a fight in the next game and retrieved one of the breaks when her opponent sailed a forehand wide after a long rally but Wozniacki made no mistake second time around, taking the first set in just 27 minutes.
Gajdosova, ranked 28th in the world, has been in good form, reaching the quarterfinal in Estoril and then winning her second WTA World Tour title at Hobart. But she was immediately under pressure at the start of the second set and could not prevent Wozniacki picking up another break.
The 20-year-old Wozniacki was playing a more offensive game and repeatedly had Gajdosova clambering all over the court. The Australian No.2 could not generate any degree of dominance on her serve and quickly found herself trailing 1-2.
Gajdosova had several chances to break back in the next game but Wozniacki held firm, although the Australian No.2 did manage to get her name on the scoreboard in her next service game. It was a merely delaying the inevitable, however, and a decisive forehand sealed a dominant and important victory for the Dane No.1.
Wozniacki now moves on ahead to face Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in the fourth round of the tournament. The Dane holds a 6-2 series advantage over the Slovakian entering into the fourth round of the tournament.
