Caroline Wozniacki edges Bojana Jovanovski in round one – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, started off the Toray Pan Pacific Open campaign with a close win over the 20-year-old Serb qualifier, Bojana Jovanovski, on Monday. She registered a bagel in the opening set but surprisingly
could just win three of the total nine games played in the second. However, the recovery from the Dane in the deciding set helped her to grab the triumph with final scores of 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Before giving the autographs to the spectators in the arena, the 11th ranked Dane stated to the media representative in an interview, “After the first set I thought to myself I was feeling really good and playing well,
although I felt a little bit tired still. I felt like I made just one or two unforced errors in the second set and she was right in there. At 3-all in the third we had the rain delay and I was able to relax and get my bearings again, and I knew I had to play
more aggressive when we came back. I lost the first game back but I didn't mind, I just kept it up and was able to win through.”
The opening set witnessed a series of cracking winners from the racquet of Wozniacki. She rocked the show by winning 24 of the 31 points played in the first phase of the match. However, the comeback from the 56th ranked
Serb qualifier was worth applause. A swap of breakpoints in the middle of the set was coupled with a delicately placed drop shot that yielded the second breakthrough for the Serb. Jovanovski lost two points on her final serve game before thumping her opponent
on the back foot and took away the second set proceedings.
Both players traded breakpoints at the start of the final set before holding on to their serves for the following four games. Scores moved on to 3-3 in no time and another exchange of breakpoints kept the scores together at 4-4.
It seemed like the tie-breaker will separate the winner from the loser but the experienced of 22-year-old Dane showed her class by holding her serve to love at the most crucial stage of the match.
Jovanovski couldn’t absorb the pressure of the situation and lost the breakpoint that confirmed the second round spot for Wozniacki. She will be up against the likes of the Slovak superstar, Daniela Hantuchova, in round two.
