Caroline Wozniacki eyes world number one spot after Pan Pacific Open semi-final win
Caroline Wozniacki has successfully sailed into the final of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament being held in Tokyo. The current world number two is playing brilliantly and is on the verge of grasping the world number one rank.
The twenty year old Danish tennis ace has qualified for the final of the Pan Pacific tennis tournament. Grabbing the world number one rank is very possible for her if she wins the ongoing Pan Pacific trophy and enters the semi finals stage in the upcoming China
Open tennis tournament.
In her recent match, the twenty year old faced a strong challenge from her Belarusian rival, Victoria Azarenka. It was a three set, stamina jolting match and the current world number two had to give her full to win by 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-4.
The semi final match between Wozniacki and eight seeded Azarenka was exciting and full of action as both the tennis stars fought hard to get past each other. Wozniacki snatched the first set of the match pretty convincingly. But after that, Azarenka fought
well and showed her dominance and control over the racquet. The Belarusian clinched the second set in a tie break. The third set though fell in favour of the twenty year old Dane, who gave her best to settle the brawl with an enormous effort. Wozniacki will
now face the twenty eight year old Russian tennis ace Elena Dementieva in the final of the event.
It is to be noted that the current world number one, American tennis sensation Serena Williams, is suffering from a foot injury. The absence of Serena Williams from the tennis circuit has created a window of opportunity for Wozniacki to usurp the world number
one.
The victory against Azarenka is no doubt very special for the current world number two as the victory in an enormous challenging game has given her a confidence boost for the final. When she was asked about her performance in the match, the Dane expressed her
views very excitedly and told the media that the match was very tough and she is very happy about the outcome as she was strongly challenged by Victoria. While talking about the level of competition in the match the twenty year old answered that the level
of competition is very high and no one can underestimate any opponent.
The third set and the resulting set of the match was convincingly dominated by Wozniacki. At one stage, Wozniacki was 5 games up. But Azarenka battled well and came back into the match pretty amazingly by snatching four games on
the trot. When Wozniacki was asked about her experience she said that it was a very tough challenge as she was not expecting a hard game like that. She added that she was happy when the points were 5-0 in the final set but the amazing recovery from her opponent
put incredible pressure on her.
On the other hand Azarenka seemed pretty relaxed and happy about her performance in the match and told the media that she gave her opponent a very strong challenge and that is enough to keep her motivated. She added that she had
lost her concentration over the period of the game and that is probably the reason behind her defeat.
Caroline Wozniacki is now eyeing up the world number one spot, and with the way she is playing there’s little doubt that she’ll pass the injured Serena Williams soon.
