Caroline Wozniacki flashes past Ekaterina Makarova in the second round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, devastated the Russian rising star, Ekaterina Makarova, with a bagel at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the 23-year-old to advance into the third round at this hard court
tournament which is part of WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event.
The Danish number one stayed on track to grab her 19th career title after crushing Makarova in straight sets at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Makarova, who received the limelight this season after upsetting the former world number one Serena
Williams in the fourth round at the Australian Open, spilled more errors and clobbered a lower first serve share to exit from the event in early round.
"I don't like to be out there for too long if I don't have to," the Dane said in her post-match press conference. "I mean, I like to play tennis and I love grinding it out, but if I have the opportunity to finish it off fast, I like that opportunity, as
well."
Currently ranked 4th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki assertively entered the Californian hard courts and despite losing her serve twice, she wiped out the last three games in a row to bag the opener with a 6-2 win. The Dane failed to defend
both breakpoints she came across but broke Makarova’s entire serves to dominate.
The 21-year-old went berserk in the second set and after blasting massive forehands, she swiped in all six games successively to pocket the set with a spectacular 6-0 score line.
Overall, the defending champion outclassed her rival in every department of tennis. The Dane saved one out of three breakpoints she faced and capitalised on seven out of 13 break opportunities to earn the success.
Wozniacki has made title-round appearances at this hard court event for the last two years. She also enjoyed her career best season last year, having won six titles and staying in the top rank at the WTA rankings.
"To be back here brings back really good memories," Wozniacki was quoted further. "It's like a family tournament because the same people come out and watch. I have loads of friends here and have barbecues and stuff. It just makes it feel more homey."
Next up for the Dane is the Swedish tennis ace, Sofia Arvidsson who reached this spot after upsetting the 26th seed, Monica Niculescu, in straight sets.
