Caroline Wozniacki goes through Jarmila Gajdosova in round two – French Open 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, registered her sixth win against the Aussie star, Jarmila Gajdosova, in the second round of the Roland Garros French Open on Thursday. She squashed the 72nd ranked Aussie
in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 and slapped her critics for condemning her authority in the Grand Slam tournaments.
However, the big tests are yet to come and these are the infant stages of the French Open. She will look to stamp her authority with some more wins and might be the surprise package this year just like the Chinese number one, Li
Na, appeared to be the one in 2011.
She reigned supreme over the world of women tennis for more than a year but couldn’t win a single Grand Slam title during her rule. So, this is her opportunity to shut everyone. However, it will require a world class effort from
the Dane number one who has struggled this year and stumbled down to the ninth rank in the world over the course of just five months.
The opening set witnessed an early breakthrough for the Dane who gusted away to a lead of 3-0. She repeated the similar performance and cashed in another breakpoints opportunity to lead the scores 5-1. A simple serve hold rounded
off the first part of the set. Spectators had hardly settled into the atmosphere but the first set was already over.
The second set was relatively competitive. Gajdosova held her opening two serve games and so did her rival. However, the critical breakthrough arrived in the fifth game when the Dane superstar converted a breakpoint in her favour
courtesy a perfectly placed drop shot. She was fuming in with confidence and didn’t squander a single opportunity to pound her opponent down.
Wozniacki didn’t allow a single opportunity to her competitor. She kept on exerting the pressure on the Aussie who failed to swallow the onslaught. It is proving to be a commanding start for the Dane who has failed to prove her
worth on the red dirt. She failed to reach the advanced stages of any clay court tournament; even failed to defend to her title at her home soil in Copenhagen.
Caroline Wozniacki will square off against the 23rd seed Estonian superstar, Kaia Kanepi, in the third round. The Estonian star is in terrific form and it will take a lot of guts for the Dane to overpower the inferior
ranked contestant.
