Caroline Wozniacki grabs third consecutive Pilot Pen title
Top women’s seed for U.S. Open Caroline Wozniacki won her third consecutive Pilot Pen Title last Saturday at New Haven. Wozniacki defeated Russian Nadia Petrova by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The week went good for the 20-year-old Danish star, who won in Montreal on Monday. Caroline Wozniacki has now won this tournament more than any player except Venus Williams, who won four consecutive career titles between 1999 and 2002. Wozniacki who is everyone’s favourite nowadays, said that she will try her level best to defend the title next year as well.
Caroline Wozniacki said that she loved playing this tournament; she said that she was preparing for a long time for the festival and left no stone unturned to grab the title. Tennis fans have great expectations from this tennis star in the future.
Wozniacki was in the lead from the start of the match, getting the only break of the first set in the sixth game. In the opening of the second set she broke Petrova again and seemed to be fully in control. But serves were problem for both the players in the second set; however, the Russian found her return game. Nadia Petrova beat Caroline Wozniacki three times and was about to win the set with 5-3.
Wozniacki said that the part of the problem was the sun. "It was really difficult to see the ball when you were throwing it up from one side," she said. "That made it a little bit more difficult."
In the third set Petrova was a bit upset, she appeared to have hurt her back and called for a trainer. Wozniacki went up with 2-0 but Petrova double-faulted to go down 3-1. The Russian didn’t give up and fought back to 4-3. Finally Wozniacki defeated her with a strong comeback and won the match.
"I was thinking, “OK, I have a great serve, I'm standing on the right side, I almost have new balls. So this one should be mine now," Wozniacki said.
Petrova was the last-minute wild-card entry in the tournament. The star said that she is looking forward to playing in New York. While commenting on her performance, she said that she liked her game as she served 12 aces. Petrova said that if her back would have been ok in the start of the third set, she would have given a tough competition to Wozniacki and had been closer to the victory. Maybe then, she had a chance to snatch the title but unfortunately it didn’t happen.
This season proved to be lucky for the Danish player, Caroline Wozniacki. She won four titles this season, the most titles won by any woman on the tour.
"I feel great," Wozniacki said. "I have a Tuesday start. So, you know, I'm on a roll,” said the elevated player.
Wozniacki had a great time in New Haven. The three-time defending champion of Pilot Pen likes to spend more time in the city, going to schools. Wozniacki said on the last Thursday that she wants to attend classes at Yale. She said that she planned to apply this year but she got busy as she ascended the tennis rankings to become the No.2 player of the world. The Danish player said that she wants to think other than tennis and the college is the best source of it. She said that she would like to study business or management, perhaps by enrolling in a virtual university.
Wozniacki is going to be a tough competitor for all the players in the U.S. Open. She is noted for her defensive abilities. She is also considered as the best defensive counter-puncher in the tennis world, who has won numerous points by forcing opponent errors. Her terrific speed allows her to retrieve most of the balls hit by her opponent. Her fans are looking forward to a mind-blowing appearance in the U.S. Open this year by her.
