Caroline Wozniacki gusts away Dominika Cibulkova to reach the last four – New Haven Open 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, dismissed the 13th ranked Slovak star, Dominika Cibulkova, in just 70 minutes to confirm a semi-final berth in the New Haven Open at Yale.
She registered an emphatic straight sets score line of 6-2, 6-1 despite carrying a knock at her knee that limited her shot making to some extent.
Both these contenders know each other well. They have contested 11 matches including the battle on Thursday and the eighth ranked Dane comfortably leads the 23-year-old Slovak with head-to-head scores of 8-3.
Cibulkova and her rival held her opening serve games but the onslaught from the Dane took away the set from the Slovak who failed to hold serve on two successive occurrences; falling to a miserable trail of 1-5.
Wozniacki allowed just another serve hold to her foe; grabbing the eighth game triumph after a bit of resistance from Cibulkova that rounded off the opening set proceedings in her favour.
The luck didn’t change for the Slovak in the second phase of the match as well. She commenced with a confident serve hold but failed to win a single point on her rival’s serve that was the story of the match.
Dominating Dane continued to manoeuvre the proceedings at her will; won three straight breakpoints and allowed no opportunity at all to her rival to bounce back into the contest.
It was thumping performance from the 22-year-old Dane superstar who smashed two aces and clobbered five off the allotted nine breakpoints to put a miserable end to Cibulkova’s New Haven campaign.
The Dane said at the end of the match, "When you're winning matches you always like to come back to that place. You always feel very welcome there, just very well taken care of. That's why I enjoy it here in New Haven."
Wozniacki has a terrific record of 20 successive wins at this place and looks set to sustain the title for the third straight year.
She is struggling from an injury and that might hinder her game against the seventh seed Russian star, Maria Kirilenko, in the semi-final on the eve of Friday.
