Caroline Wozniacki in the hunt to break back in Top-10 before the year-end – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, is just a victory away from breaking into the Top-10 category again and ending the year at a high-note. She registered a flawless record at the Round Robin of the Qatar Airways Tournament
of Champions in Sofia and pushed closer to the Top-10 spot which rests with the number one Frenchwoman, Marion Bartoli, at the moment.
Wozniacki outclassed the Taiwanese superstar, Su-Wei Hsieh, in the opening Round Robin match and pushed up a gear with a confident win against the 16th ranked Italian star, Roberta Vinci, in the second Round Robin clash.
She lost the opening set against the former world number five, Daniela Hantuchova, but bounced back to win the close second set tie-breaker and rounded off the victory with a tight final battle.
It was probably a good stretch for the 22-year-old Dane who will lock horns against the 44th ranked Bulgarian ace, Tsvetana Pironkova, on Saturday to battle for a place in the final showdown of the Tournament of Champions.
If she manages to win the contest against the local superstar, she will swap places the 10th ranked Marion Bartoli and end the year at a high-note.
Rounding up the performance of the Dane in the current season, one can easily state that she was no way near the form she showed in the past year. She just reached three finals in 2012 and managed to convert two of the opportunities
in her favour; winning the Hansol Korea Open in Seoul and the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Apart from three final appearances, Wozniacki reached semi-final of four tournaments including the Dubai Duty Free Championships, Sony Ericson Open, Rogers Cup and the New
Haven Open. So, it has been a sad year for someone who started as the number one player in the world and stumbled out of the league of Top-10 players.
Despite a very substandard season, the Dane has managed to pick up momentum towards the end. She is the top seed at the Tournament of Champions and has a relatively easier semi-final draw as well, hence, should be able to reach
the final of the tournament as well as clasp the 10th spot back.
