Caroline Wozniacki is bidding to get breakthrough at the US Open (Part Two) – Tennis Special
Danish number one, Caroline Wozniacki, cruised to the final showdown at the e-Boks Open in Copenhagen after making a semi-final berth in Miami. She bowed out to the German number one Angelique Kerber in the title-round but made
her best year-to-date performance.
The former world number one, Wozniacki high-spiritedly entered Farum Arena in order to defend her title. She tumbled Poland’s Urszula Radwanska in straight sets in her opening round match. The Dane improved her game after that
and crippled France’s Pauline Parmentier with a breadstick to reach quarters.
In the final eight, Wozniacki went berserk and slew the French star, Alize Cornet, with a bagel in 65 minutes. She cashed in all four break chances to breeze into semi-finals where Petra Martic awaited. The Dane carried her momentum
and dumped the Croat in straight sets to book a spot in the final round.
Wozniacki stated in a courtside interview after improving to 14-0 in Copenhagen:
"It's always nice to win at home but I don't think about it too much. I don't think it's easy for me here, because there are a lot of good players. I just seem to play very consistently here, which is when I'm dangerous."
However, she failed to pass her biggest test in the final. She crashed out to second seeded Kerber in brutal straight sets, eventually failing to clinch her maiden title this circuit.
The 22-year-old lost her track after that and exited from early rounds at the following tournaments she entered. Wozniacki exited to Kerber again in the round of 16 at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart the following month.
The ecstatic Dane managed to reach the pre-quarters at the Mutua Madrid Open (lost to ninth seeded Serena Williams). However, she crashed out to Anabel Medina Garrigues in the opening round at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia, a
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Rome.
Wozniacki made a third round showing at the Roland Garros but fell to a three-match losing streak. She lost to Austria’s Tamira Paszek in the opening round at the Wimbledon Championships.
Currently ranked eighth in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki rebounded at the London Olympics held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon. She rallied past Anne Keothavong, Yanina Wickmayer and Daniela Hantuchova
before bowing out to former world number one, Williams.
The 14th time Grand Slam titlist, Williams, praised the Dane after the match:
"It wasn't a quick first set - it was 32 minutes, it's not as if it was 15 minutes. She was playing really tough. But I know I can rally up to a hundred balls if necessary, and when you're playing Caroline you have to be ready
to do that. She's so consistent - she was No.1 for a reason.”
The Danish top is now eyeing for her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, last of the four Major tennis events held in Corona Park, New York City. However, in order to do so, she needs to lift her game against the Top 10 players
and should unleash her rage mode.
