Caroline Wozniacki locks title match spot with straight-sets win over Jelena Jankovic
Current World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki ended third seed Jelena Jankovic’s run at Charleston just minutes ago, defeating the Serbian pro in easy straight sets 6-4, 6-4 at the semi-final of the 2011 Family Circle Cup. The Danish top seed took just over
one hour and forty-five minutes to defeat her opponent.
At the age of 20, Wozniacki is one of the youngest top players in the history of tennis. However, she is also one of the only top players who has not won a Grand Slam yet, despite recording impressive victories over the past few years. She turned pro in
2005, and already has fourteen titles to her name. Jankovic, on the other hand, also made a brief appearance at the World Number 1 position some years ago. She joined the tour almost eleven years ago, and has won twelve titles so far. She is currently ranked
World Number 8.
Wozniacki scored her second straight-sets victory over Jelena Jankovic today, double faulting thrice and scoring no aces in the process. However, she managed to take the lead by breaking her Serbian opponent five times out of eight. Despite being broken
thrice herself, she managed to keep her advantage and won the match with 55 per cent of the total points to set up a winning scoreline of 6-4, 6-4.
The victory came as a surprise to many spectators, especially after the top seed battled up from a set down to defeat World Number 23 Yanina Wickmayer at the quarterfinals. Many pundits felt that she may have been fatigued, especially in comparison with
Jankovic who scored a swift and easy 6-2, 6-0 victory over American teenager Christina McHale. The head to head record between Wozniacki and Jankovic is now 4-2 to the Serb, although Wozniacki may have figured out her game play as she defeated her just weeks
ago in Dubai as well.
Caroline Wozniacki will take on either Shuai Peng of China, or Elena Vesnina of Russia in the title match of this prestigious Premier tournament at Charleston tomorrow.
