Caroline Wozniacki loses another title in Dubai; time for her to regroup – Tennis Special
Former World Number one, Caroline Wozniacki, fails to deliver at Dubai and loses to the 19th ranked German starlet, Julia Goerges, in the semi-final of the tournament. It ended her dream of defending her title on one of her favourite venues in
the World.
This is what she had to say after her close but agonising loss to her counterpart in the semi-final on Friday, "I didn't play my best game today. I made way too many unforced errors, and Julia took advantage of it. She didn't really allow me to get a rhythm.
Every time I felt I was back in the game playing well, I made some unforced errors at very important times, which of course is a bit disappointing, but can't do anything about it now."
She is already under an immense amount of pressure. Questions about her deserving number one spot are shut after she was dethroned by the Belarusian tennis icon, Victoria Azarenka, in the final of the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.
Azarenka is still unbeaten in 2012 and that shows her desperation to hold on to that number one spot for quite a long time. On the other hand, Wozniacki has never felt of becoming a major Grand Slam Champion throughout her professional career to date.
However, Julia Goerges had some sweet words to say to her opponent in a post-match interview in Dubai. She said, “It's never easy playing Caroline. She gets a lot of balls back and it's a lot of rallies. We played over two hours for two sets.”
It is always difficult to stand up to the criticism and respond with your racquet not with your tongue. Million thoughts are running in your mind and you just cannot concentrate on your game well enough to devise a plan against your opponent. Same is the
case with the Dane at the moment. She has recently broken up with her relatively new Spanish coach, Ricardo Sanchez, after her dismal run in the Australian Open tournament. They were just together for two months and now her father has once again taken charge
of grooming her daughter.
Probably, it is high-time for the Dane to snub all thoughts and start it all over again. She is ranked number four in the World but the pressure of performing well in the advanced stages of the tournament has definitely deteriorated her game. She might slip
a few more places due to her dismal run in 2012.
Wozniacki started her new season in the Hopman Cup but lost to Petra Kvitova in her third match. She won just one encounter in the Apia Sydney International before bowing down to the finalist of Dubai Championships, Agnieszka Radwanska. She made it into
the quarter-final stage of the Australian Open but could not surpass the defending Champion, Kim Clijsters. She lost the first match in the Qatar Total Open and on Friday Goerges halted her campaign of defending her title at Dubai.
She will be looking to step up and forget what everyone has to say about her. She needs to believe in her abilities and perform well against the big guns in the advanced stages of the tournaments. If she can do that, she can still become World Number one
and dominate all her critics at once.
