Caroline Wozniacki loses to Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Dominika Cibulkova has moved menacingly closer to the Wimbledon Championships title after taking advantage of Caroline Wozniacki’s sloppy game to reach the quarterfinal of the tournament, being played here at the All England Tennis
Club on Monday.
Ranked 24th, Cibulkova needed to ride her luck in her fourth round match at the Wimbledon Championships as she battled back from a set down to overcome the World No.1.
The Slovakian No.2 produced an uncharacteristically sloppy display in the opener as her opponent’s big hitting and aggressive style forced her into unlikely errors. However, she did not lose control and pushed past the Dane to
reach the quarterfinals for the first time in her career.
It was the second time in their prior eight meetings that the Slovakian had been taken past three sets before she eventually wore down her opponent 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in two hours and 35 minutes.
The turning point of the match was at the end of an epic second set when Wozniacki failed to take two set point chances on her serve losing the tie-break.
Talking about Cilbulkova, Wozniacki said, "She just goes for everything. She doesn't hold back. If it goes in, it's tough, but we had a lot of long rallies and a lot of good points, and unfortunately I didn't win today. She played
well - I just have to give credit to her.”
The Slovakian No.1 concluded the match with a whopping 44 winners while committing 31 unforced errors. She won 74 percent of points on her service, 36 percent of points on second serve and a total of 42 of 111 points on return.
Up next for Cibulkova is the Russian No.1, Maria Sharapova, whom she has beaten twice in her four attempts, making their head-to-head score tied at two matches each.
Though both women are extremely different in style and resume, one thing in common is a self-belief that they can win this tournament. Certainly, Sharapova, who accomplished the feat in 2004, arrived with plenty of back up to claim
the throne, reaching the final round at Miami before losing to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets.
However, the Russian No.1 is going to meet a huge hurdle in Cibulkova’s game since the latter is at an-all-time high right now.
