Caroline Wozniacki loses to Julia Goerges; crashes out of the Mutua Madrid Open
German Julia Goerges survived a mid match lapse against top seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki in a three set thriller on Thursday to advance into the quarter-finals of the 2011 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open. She registered a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over the Dane.
The world number 27, German rallied past world number one Wozniacki in two hours at Park Manzanares. She defeated Wozniacki in the final at Stuttgart two weeks ago and overpowering her again in this WTA Premier Mandatory event. Goerges now levelled her head-to-head series against the Dane by 2-2.
20-year-old Dane had been in top form earlier in the season as she won titles at Dubai, Indian Wells and Charleston. She also made final berth at Doha and Stuttgart though she failed to clinch a title win. Wozniacki triumphed over Japanese Ayumi Morita in straight sets in the second round here.
The German on the other side of net is in great form as well. She won the title at Stuttgart after defeating Wozniacki in the final before entering this WTA Premier Mandatory event. Goerges stormed into the opening set and picked up balls from all corner of court to take the lead. She was trailing 0-3 when she fired-up to reel off the next five games in a row. The German then held her serve in the tenth game to pocket by six games to four.
The frustrated seed went on savage mode in the second set and won first five games in a row through her quick forehands and backhands. She then held her serve in the seventh game to earn a breadstick. Wozniacki saved both breakpoints faced and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to help win easily.
Goerges bounced back and build up her momentum in the decider and held her serve in the first game spectacularly. She then kept her remaining serves convincingly and broke the Dane’s serve in the eighth game to eventually seal the set with a 6-3 win.
The German will next face the winner of the match between Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and fifth seeded Australian Samantha Stosur.
