Caroline Wozniacki moves past Irina Falconi into the second round – e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2011
World number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is through to the round of 16, after scoring a routine victory over world number 109 Irina Falconi of America in the first round of 2011 e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Dane crushed the American in two sets 6-2, 6-3, taking two hours and forty three minutes of play.
The exciting contest was a test of nerves for both contestants but Wozniacki proved to be the better player as expected. She recorded her 41stvictory of the running year to step into the next round of the WTA (Women
Tennis Association) tournament. It was the second time the Dane faced Falconi in any World Tour event and she again proved her mettle to overcome the American in an easy contest.
Expressing her views in a post-match interview, Wozniacki said, "I don't think it was my best performance but I'm happy I'm through to the next round, it’s always difficult to play your first match of a tournament but it was nice
having so many people out there supporting me."
The 20-year-old Dane outdid her American assailant in every section of the game and in the course of time she secured a straight sets victory. Wozniacki cobbled up eight opportunities to break Falconi’s serve and converted five
of them en route to victory. Although Wozniacki herself experienced two serve breaks in the game, she kept netting crucial points on regularity to gain the major advantage in the contest.
Falconi had a messy start to the opener, with a below average serve percentage of just 58 percent. She suffered an early break from the Dane but managed to crack a serve break in the fourth game to tie the score at 2-all. However,
the aggressive Dane executed some glamorous groundstrokes to belt her decisive serve break of the game and was left serving for the set at 5-2. She racked up 13 of 21 total service points and exclusively closed out the first set at 6-2 to get one up in the
contest.
However, the American perked up the level of her game and had a strict control over her mistakes in the following set. Falconi stung one serve break in the second set but the motivated Dane was up to the task, breaking the American’s
serve on three two different occasions. Wozniacki kept imposing massive pressure upon Falconi, who eventually decayed in the ninth game of the second set, submitting the contest at 6-3.
The Dane got through to the second round of the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open, where she will play either German Angelique Kerber or Karolina Pliskova.
