Caroline Wozniacki ousts Petra Cetkovska to claim title win – New Haven Open 2011
World number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, remained unbeaten at the New Haven Open at Yale, clinching the championship title for the fourth straight year defeating the 40th ranked Czech competitor, Petra Cetkovska,
in the final on Saturday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, with the top seeded Dane registering her 53rd victory of the running year to clinch the WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) Premier-level tournament. Wozniacki took just one hour and twenty one minutes of play, settling the final scores at 6-4, 6-1, to claim the New Haven Open at Yale title for a fourth consecutive occurrence.
After suffering humiliating defeats in her opening matches at Toronto and Cincinnati, Wozniacki came to New Haven Open in search of her vintage form and annihilated every competitor she faced to bag her sixth WTA championship title.
She was off to a steady start in the Saturday’s final but once she broke her opponent’s serve at 4-4 in the opening set, the top seed never looked back at her and rocketed away to victory with the utmost ease.
“It was important for me to start well in the second set,” Wozniacki said in her post match reviews, “I just wanted to get a bit of a lead. Then I kept my focus and didn't let her back in. It’s a great tournament for me. I love
being back here, I said it before. I still can’t really believe I’ve been here four times already. I definitely feel like I’m hitting the ball well. I’m on a good roll. I’m looking forward to the Open.”
Making into the main draws of the New Haven Open at Yale by winning the qualifying draws, Cetkovska beat all the odds in the tournament to force her way to her first WTA Premier Series final to face the world number one. The 26-year-old
Czech defeated the fifth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, world number nine Marion Bartoli of France and the world number seven, Li Na of China, en route to the final but failed to withstand the fury of the top ranked Dane.
“If somebody told me that before this tournament, I don't think I would believe it,” she jubilated after winning the semi-final against this year’s French Open winner, Li Na. “But I’m still not done. There’s one more match to play.”
Wozniacki bagged a crucial title victory at the New Haven Open at Yale, which was the last stop before the US Open, and gained her confidence she lost after her recent defeats.
