Caroline Wozniacki out runs Andrea Petkovic in quarterfinal – US Open 2011
Number one seed Caroline Wozniacki faced number ten seed Andrea Petkovic in the quarter finals of the US Open 2011 on Thursday, 8th September. The two took to a smaller court than expected because of the down pour in
the last two days. As the two battled it out on show court 13 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Wozniacki completed the match with a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6(5) victory in one hour and forty minutes.
The two had met twice prior to this event during this year; once at the Miami Open which was their first meeting where Petkovic had won t he match and the second time was at Stuttgart, Germany where Wozniacki had avenged her loss
against Petkovic. This was their third meeting and luckily for Wozniacki, Petkovic was all over the place.
The number one seed for the fifth Grand Slam in a row was the first to open the set. Both the players won on their serves in the first two games but after that Wozniacki was in top gear as she broke her opponent’s serve twice in
the following four games. She then went on to conquering the opening set as she ambushed the seventh game by breaking her opponent for the third and last time.
By the end of the first set Wozniacki cruised toward the second set as she accomplished almost twice as many points than Petkovic. The Dane was looking for a quick second set victory but Petkovic was not going down without a fight
and fought back a blow for a blow in the second set.
Opening the second set was Wozniacki; both the players won on their respective serves in the first two games but in the following the two broke each other back-to-back to even the score at 2-2. Again by holding their serve in the
fifth and sixth game they levelled the score at 3-3. Subsequently, both again broke back to level the score at 4-4 and by holding their serves in the ninth and tenth game, they again levelled it at 5-5. Ultimately in the eleventh game Wozniacki broke to take
the lead at 6-5, in the twelfth game she was serving for the match but Petkovic pushed the set to a tie breaker.
The toe-to-toe run between the two players lost its vigour in the tiebreaker. Petkovic had a tough time holding the number one Dane at bay as the two players kept the score tied for ten points with neither player letting up on
their service. However, a costly foot fault from Petkovic gave Wozniacki the break she needed as she lurched off two straight points to bag the tiebreaker, 7-5.
Wozniacki will face the number 28 seed and 13 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the semi final of the US Open 2011.
