Caroline Wozniacki outfoxes Tsvetana Pironkova to enter title-round – Tournament of Champions 2012
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark, crippled the local wild card entrant, Tsvetana Pironkova, with a breadstick at the Qatar Airways Tournament of Champions on Saturday. She jolted down a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the Bulgaria number one
to power into the final showdown at this season-ending tournament taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Seeded top at this event, Wozniacki recreated her magic to outclass the Bulgarian and crack back into the Top 10. After stealing the show in one hour and 35 minutes, the Dane improved to a 4-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against the world
number 42 and secured a spot in the title-round.
The Dane jubilantly stated in an on-court interview after securing the final berth:
"She was playing well at the beginning - she had nothing to lose, and she was playing in front of her home crowd. It's never easy playing a player in front of their home crowd, but once I got used to her playing style, things got better for me. I'm happy
to move through in straight sets today."
Pironkova reflected about her loss: "I did my best, which was the main goal for me. Even if I lost, this was an amazing week for me... it has been very exciting to play in front of my home crowd at a tournament of this level for the first time."
Wozniacki assertively entered the Armeets Arena. She smoothly bagged her entire serves through exquisite forehands from her arsenal of skills. The Dane got the breakthrough in the last game and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win. She was never challenged
with any trouble and converted one out of four break chances to her advantage.
Currently ranked 10th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wozniacki went berserk in the proceeding set. She winded up five games in a row before Pironkova could come on the score sheet. The Dane slid her serve once again and pulled out the set with a
breadstick.
Next in queue for Wozniacki is the second seed, Nadia Petrova from Russia. Petrova bounced back to overpower Italy’s Roberto Vinci in a three-set thriller to set up this outing.
