Caroline Wozniacki pens down a contract with Apia International
Sydney for 2013 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, ended the 2012 season with an emphatic run at the Kremlin Cup that was carried to the Tournament of Champions in Sofia. She clinched the title in Moscow after beating the top seed superstar,
Samantha Stosur, in the final. However, she failed to put aside the former world number three, Nadia Petrova, in the final of the Tournament of Champions and lost the battle in straight sets. She won eight matches in a row towards the end before the stupendous
run was ended by the 30-year-old Russian star.
Wozniacki was the second woman from the Top-10 category to pen down a deal with the Apia Sydney International for the participation in the next season’s edition of the tournament. Former French Open Champion, Li Na, who is ranked
seventh in the world, was the first one to commit to the tournament that has yielded nine out of 10 wins for her in the past two years. The 22-year-old Dane had a forgettable run at Sydney in the current season. She was the top seed performer and ousted Dominika
Cibulkova in the opening round before being dumped by the seventh seed Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, despite having led the set scores by 1-0 at the start.
Tournament Director of Apia Sydney International, Craig Watson commented, “Caroline is one of the most successful players on the women's tour with 20 WTA titles to her name. I am looking forward to having the world No.10 return
to Sydney for the fourth time. We announced our strongest men's line-up in years for the 2013 event and I am delighted to add two of the most popular players on the women's tour, both ranked in the world's top 10, to our field ensuring we will again have an
extremely strong and talented women's draw in Sydney.”
She is looking to revive some glory and prove her worth by participating again in the tournament that yielded absolutely nothing for her in 2012. She is taking it as a challenge and probably banking on the fantastic run witnessed
towards the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how the Dane star manages to live up to the expectations of her fanatics who were thoroughly displeased by her performance in 2012; just two titles including the Hansol Korea Open and Kremlin Cup.
It was a painful season for the former world number one but she has made a promising end to the season that has hinted at a better season in 2013.
